I would like to know if I am the one who is out of line. [Feb. 28th, 2009|06:06 pm]

The flame-fest in my journal (over the Obama chimp cartoon) is winding down, but it occurs to me that my black friends-listers have been silent. This is probably because their own LJs sit collecting cobwebs. So, I would like to know if I was out of line when I started yelling, or if I was unacceptably harsh, or if I was just plain wrong.

My now ex-friend said this in a comment:
Frankly, I'm seeing a double standard here. Cries of 'racism,' while frequently are justified, they aren't always on target and we as a society need to learn to call bullshit on people who start shouting racism when it really just isn't there. It's divisive and harmful. It forces one segment of society to walk on eggshells because they might upset someone else. Screw that. We do NOT have the right to not be offended. I feel the same way about people who are easily offended because they look for things to be offended about, even things that were in no way intended offensively. Let's be real about things. Here's my take on primates in reference to people -- First off, my parents called me a monkey, and I call my son a monkey. We're white. Secondly, George W. Bush was made fun of early in his presidency for looking quite chimp like, and he's white. (http://web.mit.edu/margret/www/myndir/comics/bush_chimp.jpg)
Thirdly, the issue of a chimp getting shot after an attack was a very timely current event. And finally, "a chimpanzee with a typewriter could do a better job" is an old saying that really has nothing to do with race. Also, President Obama wasn't the person who wrote the bill.

See, what I'm saying here is that I really don't think this was racially motivated. It's just political lampooning. Sure, there might be some people who equate primates with blacks, but really more often I think primates have been equated in general with humans who are in some way goofy, playful, stupid, overly energetic or less refined than civil society would like. So why are blacks reaching out and owning a primate stereotype? White people act like monkeys, apes, chimps and gorillas, too. Don't bogart the primates. Share the primate image with anyone who acts like one, regardless of their race.
and I responded with this post.

So, was I an "asshole" who was "out of line" for saying what I said? (Please don't go trolling anyone's personal journals; I've got enough crap to deal with as it is.)

You'll Get A Comment Whether You Want One Or Not. [Dec. 7th, 2008|02:48 pm]

I'd like to comment on the previous message, but since it seems like the only post on this community in which I CAN'T, I'll leave a message here.

I'm not sure whether this woman should have been dismissed or not. There have been a hell of a lot of people who have made anti-black remarks who are not dismissed from their jobs.

But I just want to say that this debate is not black vs. gay. It's also an insult to black people we know who are gay and lesbian. Hell, I am straight, and I'm insulted.

Marry who you want to marry. If you are for traditional marriage. Great. Go ahead and use that as your rule of thumb.

But don't tell someone else they can't get married to another person. Just don't.

I am straight, but if I know two people who want to get married who are the same gender, if they love each other, you won't find me objecting. How does it threaten me that they consecrate their vows and are treated equally? Are you really that insecure?

What about the black woman that gets racist remarks for being black and and homophobic remarks from heterosexuals, including black people? Do you shed tears for her? No? Then spare me.

I wasn't until I read this. Now I am one truly angry black chick.

After Being Fired For Anti-Gay Rant, University VP Sues

By Carlos Santoscoy
Published: December 03, 2008

A former University of Toledo vice president who was fired after making anti-gay statements says she is suing the university for violating her First Amendment right to free speech.

Crystal Dixon was the associate vice president of human resources for the university when she responded to Toledo Free Press Editor-In-Chief Michael S. Miller's pro-gay opinion piece Gay Rights and Wrongs, where he opined, “It's basic Golden Rule territory: Don't judge people for the color of their skin or their physical challenges, and don't judge them for their sexuality.

Her response was published on the Toledo Free Press website.

“As a Black woman who happens to be an alumnus of the University of Toledo's Graduate School, an employee and business owner,” Dixon wrote, “I take great umbrage at the notion that those choosing the homosexual lifestyle are 'civil rights victims'. Here's why: I cannot wake up tomorrow and not be a Black woman. I am genetically and biologically a Black woman and very pleased to be so as my Creator intended.”

“Daily, thousands of homosexuals make a life decision to leave the gay lifestyle evidenced by the growing population of P-FOX ... and Exodus International.” Both P-Fox and Exodus International remain controversial groups that claim they can “cure” gays through the power of prayer.

Dixon goes on to quote the Bible, and says there are consequences for violating God's “divine order.”

On April 30 Michelle Stecker, interim executive director of Equality Toledo, a group that advocates for the rights of gays and lesbians in and around the Toledo area, and a University of Toledo School of Law alumnus, sent out an action alert urging people to demand the university hold Dixon accountable for her “outrageous and defamatory” opinion piece.

“For me, the reason why it's newsworthy now is that five or ten years ago, no one would have even cared about the homophobic rant,” she told Cleveland's bi-weekly Gay People's Chronicle.

Dixon has now joined The Thomas More Law Center in pursuing a lawsuit against the university.

“It's clear that radical homosexuals have an inordinate amount of influence over the University President,” Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of The Thomas More Law Center said in a statement announcing the lawsuit. “He openly brags about being friendly to 'lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning individuals'. But he doesn't care about the constitutional free speech rights of Christians.”

“Where is the so-called free expression of ideas and tolerance that universities so adamantly defend in other contexts? Crystal Dixon has a constitutional right to privately express her personal opinions, and this particular opinion represents the view of a majority of Christian Americans. Christians believe that homosexual acts are acts of grave depravity, contrary to natural law and under no circumstances can they be approved. Christians also believe one must love the sinner, but hate the sin. Crystal Dixon believed and expressed this – essentially she was fired for being a Christian,” he said.

The Thomas More Law Center is the same group that promised legal protection for Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern after she received threats for saying, “I honestly think it's [homosexuality] the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam,” in March.

Dixon's termination letter written by university president Dr. Lloyd A. Jacobs was posted on the gay weekly Toledo Blade website.

“The public position you have taken in the Toledo Free Press is in direct contradiction to University policies and procedures,” Jacobs wrote. “Your position also calls into question your continued ability to lead a critical function within the administration as personnel actions or decisions taken in your capacity as associate vice president for human resources could be challenged or placed at risk. The result is a loss of confidence in you as an administrator.”

Dixon says she wants compensation and her six-figure job back.

“We have asserted from the beginning that Ms. Dixon was in a position of special sensitivity as associate vice president for human resources and this issue is not about freedom of speech, but about her ability to perform that job given her statements in the Toledo Free Press. We are convinced of the correctness of our position and will bring the facts to our defense in a court of law,” university spokesman Larry Burns said in a statement provided to The Associated Press.

“President Lloyd Jacobs has done the right things,” said Stecker.

genderpac

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young.  GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFEtm campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at:  www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student.

While we greatly appreciate the interest taken in GENIUS by students, staff and faculty at academic institutions outside of the United States, at this time GENIUS is only able to track schools based in the United States.

Here's a problem we can solve ourselves - Diversifying the Bone Marrow Registry [May. 5th, 2008|01:53 am]

kino_kid
I am known for speaking my mind. Recently I have quieted down. But now I can't. I have to speak up. This is a problem in the black community that some people aren't aware of. My brother's chances of survival depend on my being outspoken and loud as hell. Luckily I have practice.

This may be a little longer than some of the other messages on your Livejournal Friends Page, but this is only the tip of the iceberg compared to the amount of information that is out there.

I hope you do make it down to the end of the message. It could literally save lives. Including that of my brother and many others.

THE FACT IS

-70% of the people who need a bone marrow transplant will need an unrelated donor

-Many people will not find their match, so more people are needed

-The most likely match is a person of the same or similar ethnicity

-There is a SEVERE SHORTAGE OF PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT on the registries worldwide. It is very hard to match someone who is African Caribbean.

-49% of the matches in the US involve an INTERNATIONAL DONOR OR RECIPIENT, including recipients in countries where there are no registries, which includes all of the Caribbean.

-THIS IS A LIFE-SAVING PROCEDURE that is low-risk, not time-consuming, and not done at a cost to the donor.

There are a lot of myths surrounding donation. The facts may surprise you. If you want to know more about the two types of donation, watch this video.

Please check out my Livejournal for information on registering for free in the US from May 5 to 19, 2008. It is free to register in many countries including Canada and the UK.
